Touching Lives started in 2002 and the first project was launched on 22nd Nov 2003. It is registered under the Bombay Public Act, 1950 and under 12(A) 80G. It started its first project in association with Children Toy Foundation working every Sunday with the Government Hospitals by spending time at the Children’s Ward. Touching Lives provided them with toys and encouraged them to be happy which was quite therapeutic.
Sparsh – Live, Learn & Pass it on was one of the projects designed by us to have some learning about the children in and around Mumbai. The main aim of the project was to learn from the people, the children living on the streets, their parents and concerned others. This was a great way to know their lives better. And we realized we need to help them according to what they need. Thus, the project started with 15 children in the Fort area, (Dalal Street) with the help of Mr. Davendra Desai (Founder of The Children Toy Foundation). His modesty helped us to use his working space to spend time with children on Saturdays. The work continued for a year and half. By that time we could get some children to rejoin the BMC schools, helped children above 18 years learn driving and got a few children in hostels.
Our next project was ‘Kala-Kendra’ which was camping for art for the children going to BMC schools in Vile Parle. Thanks to Dr. Ila Shah who kindly offered her help and space for conducting the camp.
The fourth project we did was a health camp during 26/7 for the slum-dwellers in Nehru Nagar, Vile Parle. We did a two-day health check-up camp providing medical health and social support to those who were affected by rains and false tsunami stampede. Thanks again to Dr. Ila Shah to sponsor medicines and the social workers at Nehru Nagar to provide their space for the same.
The fifth project we did was with The Writer’s Wing Founder, Mrs. Reyna Rupani who also our first write-up with Westside, Times of India. This was a fund-raising event where the team of The Writer’s Wing chose its profit to be donated to Touching Lives. We carried out a small carnival at Raheja center, Andheri where our children from Sparsh were encouraged to perform a skit and dance on the stage.
The sixth project was developing a module on ‘Play Therapy’ which was a 12 Saturday Program of two hours where the mentors were trained on the basics of psychology with the activities in the therapy. With the help of The Children Toy Foundation, we did a pilot project with Los Angeles BMC school in Matunga and gathered unique studies out of it. The play therapy project was remodeled according to the needs of the children.
And finally there came a time, when Touching Lives was getting registered. Our expert for registration was Ms. Safia Mohammad who is a well experienced Chartered Accountant. We got registered in 2006 under 1950, Public Trust Act and then 12(A) 80G soon after that.
Our bank account is with HDFC, Borivili Branch, Mumbai.
